Next Walk
Privacy Policy
Last updated July 5, 2026
Next Walk helps you pick a good time to walk based on local daylight and weather, and can point you to parks and trails nearby. This policy explains what the app accesses, why, and what happens to it. The short version: Next Walk uses your location to do its job, keeps your settings on your device, and does not require an account.
Information we collect
- Location — used to determine your local daylight hours (sunrise and sunset), to fetch current and forecast weather and heat conditions for your area, and to find parks and trails near you to walk to. Location is used to provide results; we do not keep a history of where you've been on our servers.
- Precise location (optional) — finding nearby parks and trails works with your approximate location, or with a city or ZIP code you type in. If you tap “Use my precise location” on the find-a-spot screen, the app makes a one-time request for your exact location to find spots closer to you. This is optional, used only at that moment, and you can decline it or use approximate location instead.
- Preferences — settings you choose, such as your temperature thresholds and ideal walk times, plus spots you star or mark as visited and the area you last searched. These are stored on your device.
- Anonymous usage data — to improve the app, we collect anonymous, aggregate information about how Next Walk is used — for example, that a walk was committed or completed, or that widgets and notifications are enabled — through a privacy-focused analytics service. This is not linked to your identity and does not include your name, email, or precise location. See Analytics and app improvement below.
Next Walk does not require an account. We do not ask for your name, email, phone number, or contacts to use the app.
How we use your information
- To calculate the daylight window available for your walk
- To check local weather and heat conditions so we can suggest a safe time to go
- To find and suggest parks and trails near you, and show how far away they are
- To show your walk reminders and countdown on your device, including in widgets and Live Activities
- To understand, anonymously and in aggregate, how the app is used so we can improve it
Weather data and Apple WeatherKit
Next Walk uses Apple WeatherKit to retrieve daylight and weather information. To return conditions for your area, your location is sent to Apple's Weather service, which provides the data back to the app. Apple handles that information under Apple's Privacy Policy. Weather data is provided by Apple Weather and its data sources; see the Apple Weather legal attribution.
Finding parks and trails, and opening maps
To suggest nearby parks and trails, the area you're searching — your location, or a city or ZIP code you enter — is sent to Apple Maps (MapKit) to return matching places and their distances. This happens on the find-a-spot screen so the app can show you results, and is handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy.
When you choose to view a spot's details or get directions, it opens in the maps app you pick — Apple Maps or Google Maps — or in your web browser. Opening a place passes its name and location to that app or service, which then handles it under its own privacy policy (for example, Google's Privacy Policy). This only happens when you tap to open a place, and you can change your preferred maps app anytime in the app's settings.
Analytics and app improvement
Next Walk uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand how the app is used in aggregate — for example, how many people commit to and complete walks, or keep widgets and notifications turned on. This helps us see what's working and decide what to improve.
This information is anonymous and is not linked to your identity. We do not collect your name, email, or precise location through analytics, it is not used to advertise to you, and it is not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites. TelemetryDeck processes this data under its own privacy policy.
Where your data lives
Your preferences and walk settings are stored on your device. We do not maintain a server-side account or profile for you, and we do not store your location history on our own servers. The one exception is the anonymous, aggregate analytics described above, which is not linked to you.
Your choices and rights
- Location — you can turn off location access for Next Walk anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, and you can leave Precise Location off and still use the app with approximate location or by typing a city or ZIP code. The daylight and weather features rely on location, so some functionality is limited without it.
- Delete — deleting the app removes its on-device data.
- Access & questions — depending on where you live (for example under GDPR or the CCPA), you may have rights regarding your personal data. Because Next Walk keeps your data on your device rather than our servers, the most direct controls are your device settings; for anything else, contact us below.
Children
Next Walk is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
